Unless your cabinets are have a very uneven surface, such as water damage, or extremely glossy like melamine, you shouldn't have to sand much. The key is to primer before you paint

Chalk paint is not mainly used for that!!!! It is meant to achieve a chalky finish. The paint you would want to use(it sounds like you want speed and ease) is a paint and primer in one.

Chalk paint, however it does not last in the kitchen, you would be better off lightly sanding, using a good stain blocking primer and then a good acrylic paint.

Chalk paint, and I love it! Charlene, it is so easy to use. Give it a try with a sample size jar, 8-16 oz. Paint any old board or picture frame to see if you like it. ☺️
