I'm using Annie Sloan chalk paint in Pure White on my kitchen cabinets. I was advised to do 3 coats after cleaning with TSP (make sure they are really clean) -- 2 coats at full strength and the last watered down. I found it really thick and watered it down on the early coats. I needed to sand them back, however, and I was told not to do this...that it isn't needed. They can be finished with the Annie Sloan special wax. I had some bleed-through and was advised to dab shellac just on those places and then paint them again. I am still waiting to do this step before the third coat and the wax. So far, the paint looks fine.
We ordered 2 kits from Giani in the Diamond White finish. You could probably get the same effect with paint and a polyacrylic coat or two. The countertop is NOT a permanent fix but with careful use and not cutting on it, allowing standing water or hot pans, it should last 3-5 years. We have just finished a major renovation of our dining/living room, staircase and upstairs foyer over the last 3 months and wanted the tradespeople out so I am doing this myself. Hope this helps.
You can! I used milk paint on mine, which is similar to chalk paint. You can read my tutorial here: http://momhomeguide.com/my-painted-kitchen-cabinets-a-year-later/
