These are tough chairs to remodel. You can make "covers" with an elastic or drawstring edge that you can place over the chair and remove for washing. You could glue foam pieces onto the chair seat and back to soften the sitting experience. I suggest shaping the back piece of foam like a wedge with the wider part on top to provide a more erect seating and more support for your back. Good Luck.
I think these things have a collector value, I'd sell them and buy ones I liked and you will probably still have cash left to do something else with.
