Where you asking about what type of wood to use? I always use cedar or redwood. You may need to go to an independent lumber yard and not a big box store to get exactly what you need. Don't use pressure treated lumber. Another consideration is if you are going to stain it or not. Are you matching an existing fence? Redwood is more expensive, but is beautiful if you want to see the grain. Cedar is a great wood for outdoor projects and can be stained or left to weather naturally. Hope this answers your question. We once had a solid board fence between these pillars (we then had a small dog) my husband made it out of plain wood and painted it white. I think it had a reverse scallop.
