Burglar-proofing your house doesn't mean turning it into an armed fortress. All you want to do is make it more difficult for an intruder to get into your house.
No Concealment Outside

Concealment is the burglar's friend. Remove any bushes and fences that could hide a burglar trying to break into your home. Add some motion-sensitive outdoor lighting.
Strong Doors

Make sure your outdoor-facing doors are strong enough to withstand at least a few vigorous kicks. Add multiple locks that include a dead bolt a few feet above the latch lock. Get a storm door that locks -- it'll be just that little bit extra that will make a burglar skip your home.
Stronger Windows

Glass breaks, so make that mode of entry a bit tougher for a burglar. Add a tough security film on the inside of the window glass that will keeps any broken glass together in its frame. Add stops that prevent a window from opening more than a few inches.
Leave No Clues

A home that doesn't look like anyone is living there is the jackpot for a burglar. When you go out of town, let the mail and newspapers pile up, don't leave the trash cans unattended and don't let the lawn go un-mowed. Ask a neighbor to take care of such things. Don't post online when you'll be going away.
Security Systems

Install a security system and use it often. Turn it on at night and whenever you leave the house. Don’t tell anyone the disarming code. Place a sign outside your home informing any burglar that your home is protected.
Use a Safe

Place important items, such as jewelry, social security cards, and bank documents, in a safe. Secure the safe to the ground or a use wall safe so it can’t be carried off.

You don't have to spend a lot of money to burglar-proof your home. Remember, all you want to do is make your home that much less enticing to a burglar so that the potential home intruder moves on to an easier target.
