Re: Kitchen cabinets- HELP!

I have builder grade wood cabinets that I am going to paint black and distress. The cabinets are standard size with ample space on top for displaying plants/items, etc., I would like to add a box to the top (to heighten them). But, I would need the top of the box to still work as a shelf to place items on top AND MOST importantly, I want to add crown molding on top as trim. HELPicon

I'm unclear. Let's say, hypothetically, you have 12" above your cabinets now. You want to build a box and STILL put stuff on top of the box you build? And where do you want crown molding?

Actually have about 3' above cabinets now, I'd like to add a box on top of my cabinets to make them appear taller (possibly staggering the heights i.e. over top of stove taller than surrounding cabinets) and then add crown molding to the top edge of the boxes. And, yes, still put stuff on top. I have very tall cathedral ceilings so there is ample height. THANKS!!!
