The easiest way to prepare your area is to mark out your area. Start at one side and cut your existing lawn with a spade, making lines from one side to the other no wider than 3' apart. Starting at a narrow end, cut under the sod and roll it up as you go. When you get to then end remove the sod rolls.

If your area is not relatively smooth, hoe or till it up and smooth it with a rake.

Sink marker poles at the corners and run a level line of string from one pole to another around the area. Place a layer of small stones (large pebbles) and smooth it out. Next place a layer of sand over the stones, rake it out and level with a plank used as a scraper (using your level line). Place your bricks on the sand in the pattern you desire. Don't worry about space between the bricks. When done laying out your bricks, spread finish sand over the patio and sweep it across the patio until all cracks are filled and the top of your bricks are clean. Finish with a good spray wash to settle the sand. You may need to repeat the sand fill after soaking/washing.

Renting out a sod cutter is easiest. Digging/cutting with a spade. You don't want to dig down. You want the lowest angle with the spade and scrape/cut just under the grass.
