Why is my red brick crumbling

Red brick on side of my house is crumbling in several spots. How to stop this and how do I repair/replace the bad red bricks?

Is there water damage? Was it hit by something that made the bricks crack and crumble? It is brick facing or solid brick? This sounds like a job for a pro to be sire there is no structural damage somewhere behind the brick. I'd love to hear the outcome when you find out.
