I get really annoyed at DIYs that tell you to paint over wallpaper, and to lay new tile flooring over old linoleum. At some point, it's going to start looking horrible, and then someone is going to get stuck removing paint and wallpaper, (or tile and linoleum) which is a big, awful job, one I was forced to do in a house I renovated. It's a waste of time and effort to not prep your surfaces correctly. Removing wall paper by itself is not hard. Why would you not show people how to do this renovation properly?

I want to do this in my bathroom. Where did you get the wood? Is it called shiplap panels?

  • Donna Donna on Sep 18, 2018

With all the moisture from showering and such why wouldn't the wood in those spacer areas start getting moisture? When wood gets wet it gets mold. I would of just put a good sealer primer on the sides and backs of each board before I installed them. Not all the moisture gets out even with a good exhaust fan.

Note: because this is in a bathroom, I would seal BOTH sides of the wood with paint to keep it from warping. Those nails won't hold up to long should the moisture want to warp the wood. So try to locate and nail into studs whenever possible.

Regarding the floors and paint. It depends on the surface prep, and the paint itself. Some paints are formulated to bond with certain materials directly and some need a bonding material pike a primer first. Consult your paint store about your specific need.
