What is a good way to landscape around a retention pond?

We have a retention pond in our backyard that we are responsible for mowing. We would like to add some landscaping around it without spending too much money.

How big is the pond? Check with your local nursery to see what plants grow near water, in other words don't mind their roots getting wet. I would hate for you to buy plants, plant them then they die because they are too close to water. Check out this website, Pinterest for many wonderful ideas.
I've seen many people using various size rocks around retention ponds. This helps with the draining as well as the weeds that grow so there's less of a need to mow around the actual pond.
