If you have enough water to get them started well, pines are always a good option and will also capture snow.

Lots of plants are hardy in Z5 . Sounds like you need plenty of organic matter to help w/ moisture retention . Good loam, compost ,WELL rotted manure , are just a few options . Most plants need to be well watered until established , 2-3 times / week .

This is a site for the NM Master Gardeners. On the left you’ll see links to county advisors. These are great people who can best advise you, according to your locale, as to what will grow best in your situation.
Many are walking/talking encyclopedias of native plants that thrive in any conditions. I’m sure they can help you. Enjoy the search.
