Regular contact paper is not suitable for use on glass, as it will not stay stuck. You need to buy what is called 'privacy film' with is applied in a roll-on manner like contact paper, but is specially designed for glass windows.
Never use that, it cracks and peels and discolors in the sun.
If you want permanent privacy, use a Spray on Frost.
Spray on frost also takes well to stencilling.
If you want to be very artistic, you can scan and print your favorite photos in black and white or cutouts from any coloring book, to create patterns for painted glass, which too serves as a privacy method.
