You can paint cabinets but it's a lot of work to sand and make them look great. Hopefully, you can just paint over the existing finish. Try it in an inconspicuous spot. I once rented a house with cabinets that were primed but not painted. I painted them pale lavender and loved the look. It's not for everyone but for me it was beautiful. I also hung lavender sheers and replaced cabinet pulls with colored glass pulls. It was a beautiful, beautiful kitchen.
