Hi! Clean it up to remove any dust or wax residue, gently sand it (you don't want to go through the veneer) apply a good sealer like Kilz and paint. To keep the finish nice, use a clear sealer.
If you use a good acrylic paint from Benjamin Moore or Sherwin Williams you will not have to put a clear sealer on it.

Dee is right that quality brand name paints. They may be more expensive at the onset, but they give better coverage and if properly applied, should give a more durable finish as well. Be sure to use quality brushes as well.
