This is advice about using liquid sander/deglosser, which you might find more comfortable to use.
If you like the graining of the wood, consider whitewashing the walls rather than solid paint. Also, considering the details, whitewashing requires less perfection than pure white walls.

Wipe down with a deglosser like Peso (ventilation a must) and lightly sand any imperfections you find objectionable. This will soften the top coat and allow for adhesion. Use a good primer before painting.
