Garden layout advice?

We just removed a holly bush from our front garden because we lost 80% of it to winter kill. I bought a dwarf lilac to replace it but it will take a few years for it to grow in. I am not a great gardener so I would like suggestions for what to put around the lilac that won’t choke it out but that will add some height to the space until it grows and fill in the bare area. The holly was approximately 4’ diameter so it has left a large hole. The garden runs along the front step and out about 8’ Then along the house under the front windows. We live in Ottawa so things need to be hardy. Not a great picture but the only one I currently have. Thank you

What about laying down some decorative stones and a birdbath that can occupy that space until the lilac gets larger?

Hi Marilyn. I'm Cindy. I think planting bulbs around the dwarf lilac would fill the empty space. Either tulips, daffodils, crocus, or lilies would do well. That way once your dwarf grows, you can dig up the bulbs and transplant them someplace else. Best of luck to you.
