Honey is water soluble. If your area rug can be wet down, you could spray it in the shower or even a hose and wash it with the water hose to get it out. If it is wool or some other material that cannot be washed with just water, you may have to get it dry cleaned. I would try the water. Honey like sugar is easily dissolved with water.

A mix of Dawn and water, perhaps with a dash of vinegar, was recommended by our carpet cleaning company. Oh, yeah, gentle elbow grease so as to not change the texture of the spot you clean. Also may need to protect the flooring underneath from moisture.

If possible I would either put rug outside or if too large put a large pan under honey place and pour boiling water over it. If the honey has hardened just water won't remove it.
