Hosta-Why does this happen?
I have the variegated type of hosta (green and white). They grow well but it seems that they develop the flower stem quickly and then the condition of the plant changes. The plant leaves start looking "rusty" and they look like something is making slits in the leaf. Why does this happen?

They like shade, only part sun.
I pick the flower stem off. The hostas seem to last longer. They are a shade plant. They do best in the shade.
The flowers may be taking the moisture and nutrition away from the plant itself. If they get a lot of afternoon sun, they may be getting some sunburn, they don't like the hot sun at all. Mine that get no sun, or morning sun only, do much better than the ones that get more afternoon sun. Try giving them some water. My hostas are already getting the flower stems this year, but it has been either really hot and sunny, or cooler and rainy without any sun for days in a row. I don't think most plants know what to do this year.
And decent drainage. ☺️
