Hi, there is no easy way to remove the veneer and the wood underneath is sub-par, hence the veneer. This was/is a standard practice to put a thin layer of a fine wood such as walnut on -most likely- pine. Strip using a putty knife and a box cutter with a new blade. Make light cuts through the veneer and get up under the veneer using the putty knife. You will need to use a paint thinner to remove the glue that remains. Instead of removing the veneer, use a wood patch (comes in paste form) and sand. The patch will accept stains and paint. Good luck.

Use a hairdryer to help loosen the glue underneath, as you are scraping with the putty knife. It will help make it a bit easier to remove the veneer.
