Today paint manufacturers are producing very high quality, self priming exterior paints. Scratch the steel door up thoroughly with sandpaper and scrap off anything loose so that your new paint has good adhesion. If after sanding you are down to bare metal, wash to door down with white vinegar. Let dry. Then paint away with your favorite color! ...Joe S.I., NY
I used a "bonding" primer and when dry, I used latex flat paint on the outside of the door and used a latex semigloss on the inside. The bonding primer is pretty thick and dries very fast, so I used a small roller to not have the brush strokes.
