My neighbors and friends have used the 12" x 12" (or larger) concrete stepping stones from any hardware, home improvement center or landscape supply.
One of my neighbors put down as a temporary fix until she could afford to have a concrete patio poured. It is still there in perfect shape. BUT, the ground here is rock hard and it hardly ever rains.
My girlfriend did this on a portion of her property in NC where there is a lot of rain and snow, and so far has not sunk.
