Cut it out carefully and replace with a coordinating tile that is in the same color family that will blend in and not stand out.
Ah, yes, beautiful in its time, but probably not going retro. I would find a wood plaque you like, maybe with your monograms, Then use Command strips or double stick tape. if the lack of borders bothers you, use a deep picture frame that fits the outside of the tile and any picture or plaque that you like better than the tile. If you break the tile up and pry it off the wall, you can still use a picture or plaque; the frame just won’t need to be as deep. Or hang a mirror and see who’s coming up behind you in the kitchen. Best wishes, Gretchen. ☺️
Hello Gretchen,
One newer ideas of interest to me is a fireback as a decorative backsplash is to use that near the stove cooktop. It was on an episode of This Old House. Depending upon your lighting and decor sometimes a pop of black is really attractive in a room. They come in various sizes, quite heavy need to be mounted to the wall, they used an adhesive mount on TOH.

Look into a paint for ceramic tile. Sorry I don't know a brand to give you. If you paint the offending tile a solid color to match cabinets or surrounding tile, it will blend in. A short term fix until you redo your kitchen. (be careful about hanging things above your stove that might not do well with heat or humidity)
Thank you all so much for your great suggestions!
Fantastic! Love you tiles - very inspirational ... now I am not afraid to give my own kitchen area a re-do at the back of my stove thanks so much for your posting
Maybe a sheet of stainless steel measures to fit as wide as oven hood n behind stove? Attach with a proxy or caulk or maybe there is n adhesive recommended by home depot/ fleetfarm?
Use command strips and put a framed picture over it
I would hang some art there. A quote would be cute.
Paint tile white including focal point to bring up to date until ready to remodel.
