Has anyone used those stone/wood/brick panels on the kicks of stairs?

Has anyone used those stone/wood/brick polyurethane panels seen on home shows and if so have you used them on the kicks of your stairs? Wondering if this impeded the gate of one's stepping? If it was too thick would it cause a problem when climbing up the stairs. We have been wanting to go over our prefab ext. staircase that is 40 years old but costs as much as a new stone/brick staircase and since you only see the kick from the street thought this maybe a good alternative. My husband says you'll trip climbing stairs can anyone help me w/ this question or have a better alternative? Don't want to put chicken wire and new cement! Thank you!!!

Yes, you risk decreasing the tread depth, posing a potential for falls (and lawsuits...). You don't state what material your steps are, but why not stencil a pattern on the risers, prime, paint, seal?
