We killed fleas in our yard the birds brought in. (It had to be birds or other small animals as our dogs had none and it was a brand new subdivision and we planted our grass). After being there about 2 yrs we noticed fleas on our pets who were usually in the house or yard with us. Anyway, we did not let the pets in the back yard for 10 days and put down Sevin dust all over it. After ten days we did it again for any new fleas hatching. For 3 weeks we kept our dogs off the back yard (it can make pets ill if they walk in it etc). We especially heavily doused it in areas where our dogs like to sleep when we were all outside. We had no more trouble after that and never got fleas again. We also quit feeding birds and took away the bird bath to discourage birds from the yard. We never had trouble again. I hope this helps. Sevin dust is available at home improvement stores. Follow the directions on handling it. I just used my hands. We did not find it that toxic and my Grandma said it was the safest one to use. I trusted her judgment. We also bathed our dogs daily for about a week and made sure no fleas were in the house. By bathe I mean put them in the shower, shampooed them and rinsed them off. It only took a few minutes each day to keep fleas off going out to our front yard to do their business. We never had trouble again after that.
