Depends on your location. Most areas will have specific plants you'll see used, repeatedly, because they work (planting zone friendly). Same for color choices, but ultimately, it's your decision. Some people don't mind a high maintenance yard, while others detest it. Less is more, now, due to peoples' lack of time for pruning, deadheading, mulch replacement time and expense, watering, etc.
Agree with Oliva. The answer depends on your zone. What grows well in Florida won't necessarily do well in Washington state.
Folks usually want full green plants in a generally semetrical, balanced pattern. Y’all evergreens in the back, then other medium-sized plants in the center, and annuals or other smaller plants up front. What do you think? ☺️
Look around your area and see what grows best and what you like the look of. Then visit a local garden center and get their advice for plant maintenance, etc.
