Garden Stepping Stones That Glow
We have 5 pathways constructed with various stepping stones winding throughout our garden. The floor of the garden is made of decorative small rocks. Because of the heat in Las Vegas even animals don't want to step on the burning hot rocks in bare feet. Walking on the pathways stones is an enormous help. At night the pathways are difficult to see. Stepping Stones that glow in the dark was a great idea that originated with Lenora Lynn Moor and Jenny Hen. They are also members of our Hometalk Tutorial Team. Their stepping stones were so beautiful that I was inspirited to make some for our own pathways.
I began with a square stone that was close to the patio. It would be easy to take inside and easy to see from the patio. I washed the stone with just soap and water until I was seeing clear water. Then I let it dry over night. In the morning I painted a tree branch and bird with 4 coats of Anita's All Purpose Glow craft paint. It took 4 coats as the stone was poursus and soaked up a lot of paint.
As the sun set the stone showed no signs of glowing. By dead of night it was even difficult to find the stone. Time to try a new technique. I chose a flat rock stone. After washing it, I primed it with Kilz primer, sealer and white paint. I let that dry over night also. I used a template to make a butterfly. I changed brands of paint. Now I used GloMania UV Neon paints that I purchased through Amazon.
Using a sandpaper hand block I sanded off some ares of the Primer to give it an aged look. The picture below is showing the process of giving the stone a second coat of GoMania.
I let the stone dry. I set in on a patio table so I wouldn't have to walk into the garden to check for glow. At 4:00 am I stepped outside to check the stone. It glowed!!! It is not a floodlight type glow. It is a soft glow that is lovely but not over done. Back it goes into the garden
Arriving at a correct paint was the biggest issue. Once you have the right paint, this is a really easy upgrade to any garden. Hope you have fun.
