If they are a cover, it can be removed and replaced by tile, tileboard, etc. If it is tile it can be covered by acrylic surround walls in various styles and colors (depending on how much you want to spend. You can see these surrounds at Lowe's and Home Depot and even order them online if you are comfortable with measuring.
