How to pick a color for painting a front door?

I just had a new front door installed, simple with six small windows on the top. Now I need to try and figure out a good paint colour that will match both the brick and the siding (on the top portion of my house).... any suggestions on how to pick a suitable colour?

  • It depends on the color of the brick and your siding. If you want it to stand out, red, yellow, or bright blue are some colors to consider. To have it blend in, gray, dark blue or green may be the best bet.

I used a colour wheel to help make my decision!

I stood out on the street, closed my eyes and made note of the most dominant colour when I opened them again (don’t think about it, just the first colour you see)...then I figured out whether it was “cool” or “ warm” . I took myself to the paint store and chose the colour opposite my dominant house colour and it was perfect! If you want elegant, chose a deeper shade of the opposite or for less formal, a medium shade and for welcoming the lighter shade. Hope that helps!😊

What color is the siding on your house?

  • I like my door to stand out and my shutters to be supporting details. Look at pinterest for ideas based on the color of your home. (Search brick home exterior) and see what you love.

  • My house is gray and brick. I chose a turquoise color. Perfect & bright. Now everyone is copying me in the neighborhood.

It's hard to answer what colors would look best without seeing a photo of the house. I would pick a color that you love and use paint made specifically for doors.
