Auction find file cabinet gets a beautiful new makeover!

Wood File Cabinet

Hi all! I found this baby at a local auction, and won it for $5 bucks! It had a few scratches but nothing I could not repair. I wanted to use it in my office and I figured I only paid $5 bucks for it, so it was worth the challenge!

Hardware isn't it beautiful?

I loved the hardware, so I decided to keep it. Before starting, I removed all the hardware and gave it a good cleaning with TSP.

Added Wood

The bottom and the side trim as pretty banged up. The Hubs removed the old pieces of trim and replaced it with new wood :-)

Side view

After the Hubs finished up I cleaned the entire cabinet with my TSP. This took some time, because someone used duct tape to keep the drawers closed! Yep, duct tape ughhh! I decided to use Dixie Belle Paint in the color Apricot. This was the coordinating color that I was using in my home office redo. It took two coats, allowing 3-4 hours for drying time between coats.

Corner Brackets

I wanted to bling the cabinet up a bit. So I found these corner brackets at Lowes. Cheap 4 in a pack for about $3 bucks.

Rust-Oleum Metallic Gold

I decided I wanted to paint the hardware gold. I painted the hardware and the corner brackets using Rust-Oleum Gold Metallic spray paint. Simply the BEST gold color EVER! Don't waste your money on other brands, you will not get the pretty, bright gold color (and no they did not pay me to say that). And of course I totally forgot to take a picture of the corner brackets! UGHHHH!

See the pretty gold?

After all the hardware dried, I screwed it all back into place. I attached the corner brackets on all four corners of both drawers!

File Cabinet Makeover

And here it is! I think she turned out pretty awesome :-)

Prior to seeing your beautiful file cabinet I thought I might use some Tile that has the wood grain look (used for floors) for the top, sides and back which are all flat gray metal. Do you think that would look nice? I would paint the front with leather pulls.

    Thoughts please. Ann

    What is TSP?

Are the edges of the drawer flat or routered? I have a nightstand that is similar but think the corner brackets might look odd on an “ogeed” edge.
