I went down to my local lumber yard, told a worker that I wanted a board to mount coat hooks on. He found me a nice looking board, and I picked out my coat hooks, they came with the screws supplied. It was just a matter of getting the spacing of the hooks on the board, and screwing them on. I had put a clear sealer before adding the hooks. Then put the hanging hardware on.
How about a free standing hat and coat rack? You can purchase or DIY.

You'll find coat trees at antique shops and second hand thrift shops, or you could build your own. Even a simple board with multiple hooks would help you. You could always add trim, paint, small tiles, seashells, etc.
