I actually took up the sod with a shovel and muscle power, then tilled. I rented a big one for half a day and went to town once the sod was up and had the size right so that it was all ready to go with the tiller. I tilled twice, then tilled again with amendments so that it would mix in better. I finally got a smaller electric tiller for my veggie garden last year. I did everything by hand after the garden was tilled the first year. Did it that way since the eighties. I never thought about a sod cutter when I was starting any of my gardens. Having a tiller now is really nice, it makes it so much easier to break up the soil in the spring.
