How to renovate the flooring, backsplash in this kitchen?

The flooring is a red taracata and the backsplash is very ugly. We somewhat have a plan. If using Cortex Durado and a different backsplash and possibly keep the counter. Here’s the kitchen I’ve taken my family out. Thanks

This is a big project. Yes, the backsplash is very dark and certainly not my favorite. There are fabulous backsplashes available now. Please don’t limit yourself to HD or Lowe’s. Check tile/flooring stores for more interesting variety. And don’t miss their clearance section (after taking careful measurements of your backsplash needs, and buy extra, please).

It would not be terribly difficult to remove and replace. Go to our Search section at the top left of this page and type in Backsplash. Make a pot of coffee and read lots of great practical advice.

Re your floor. TerraCotta is very chic now. A designer might suggest you paint the cabinets rather than remove the flooring.

I assume you realize the mess and dust involved in that project.

Think about painting the floors if its if it’s just the color you hate.

I've installed vertical wainscoting, different sizes with different tints. I constantly get oohs & aahs.

  • Beautiful kitchen and cabinets! My choice would be to lighten up the floors and backsplash. Either go neutral or add a touch of color in the backsplash. Removing the terra cotta floors is going to be a messy affair so be prepared!!!

What are you considering for flooring? Backsplash?

We are considering corona dorado and it’s will go right over the old floorin. Which would have been a nightmare to remove. Thanks for all the great advice so far!

Just a word of advice about color. Grey is on it's way out! The newest colors will be lighter and warmer - probably yellow beige. If you choose a grey floor your house will scream "outdated" within 2 years. As Jcraw said, Terra Cotta is popular right now. While I personally don't like white kitchens, you do need to lighten up the cabinets. The color is too close to the color of the floor. I would choose a cream color rather than stark white. Just to see if you like the change, you can have a small panel of mdf beadboard cut to cover the backsplash tiles. Attach with two sided tape and live with it for a while. When you are ready to remove your faux backsplash, the adhesive from the tape should come off the tile without a problem.
