How to refresh the support on this lounge??

Description:

This redwood lounge chair has metal straps which are hole punched on each end.

Each End has a heavy duty spring hooked through the hole.

The Spring is hooked into a through bolt ( it's an unthreaded carriage bolt with a hole on the bolt end.)

See pictures

Issue: the metal straps have stretched out, no longer support an adult comfortably.

Replacing the springs with shorter ones did not help.

A piece of plywood (shown) for better support only made the lounge more uncomfortable....

HELP !! Ideas on how to refurbish are needed.

Outside of frame- can see the head of what I am calling a carriage bolt

This shows how the bolt attaches to spring through the frame and how the spring attaches to the metal strap

Shows how the original metal strapping is woven and secured. The metal strap fatigue is obvious.

Woven, wide webbing (can be ordered online) to which you attach grommets, then attach the original springs. Or, see if you can purchase metal strips similar to originals, and hole punch them at same points, to attach to springs.

    Hi Elizabeth

i can tell this chair is a keeper so here goes

Have you tried removing a metal strap or three and/or taking entire chair with you to a sheetmetal shop and getting new metal strips made? Probably someone that does aluminum siding could come up with a solution

Another thought is to create a wood frame to add chair webbing to hat would be attached securely on top of existing frame or fit just inside to same level of chair seat and back. You could screw added piece directly in wood and also add small l bracket for additional stability.

The chair webbing may prevent the frame from forming a solid connection

If you added webbing to existing chair frame, it would be visible on sides so that is not a good option.

Plastic straps are available but would be skeptical of llongevity at the hole punch area unless you add something there or glue to together.

Last thought is to change out to to zig zag chair springs and nylon webbing. This would be the longest lasting option although weather might make rust an issue but could coat with a plastic coat spray paint to help

Think I would replace that with the next generation zig zag/serpentine springs since they don't make the other anymore... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2_vXSs037ZY

First thought that came to mind is using metal plumbing pipe straps They are perforated every inch. Just cut to size and weave them in. Add springs. They also have perforated plastic plumbing pipe straps. From my HVAC days. I have used them for other than what they were meant for.
