Putting the space above the doors to more efficient storage use is one practical, easy and quick solution. Even if you have to leave the shelving when you move out, as the cost is low, you would still be gaining more in the meantime than you might loose. Here are some styles.

I am not sure your spacing or budget, but I love these. They go up quick and while you can't put a ton of stuff on them, they are pretty reliable. You can get them just about anywhere.

Put a chest or tall piece of furniture caddy corner and you can store a few things behind it. (like clothes for different seasons, in a suitcase or bag) Also hang drapes about 12 -14 inched away (depth) from the window and you can store items behind the drapes. Don't forget storage bins for under the bed...and you can raise your bed with bed risers to get more room...and then use a dust ruffle to hide it all. Good luck!

just an idea. PUt up a "false wall" paint it and put shelves on it. you can take it with you when you move! Or put up painted pegboard and take that with you.

I use the vacuum seal bags to store out of season stuff like big blankets and winter gear during the summer then switch them out when the season changes they really help with saving space in closets especially small closets!
