What color should we paint our cabinets?

The picture isn't our kitchen, but it's similar. The cabinets are the same and the floor is very close in color. We're hoping to sell next spring. My husband is a painter and found a deep grayish blue he saw in a house that he likes. I think white would be the obvious way to go, but I'm no pro. Thoughts? Also, we have off white appliances and beige/tan colors in a tile backsplash.

Hi Megan. White would definitely make the room feel bigger. I do know that a lot of people of using the grays. If you are selling the home I think white would be the best way to go. It would appeal to more buyers. Good Luck!

Want a great compromise that will really make your room pop? Do the cabinet fronts in the white or an off white like the appliances and the gray blue for any trim. Pow! Your kitchen just popped a breaker!

Similar idea to jan Clark's above: Paint the uppers a white-ish color to match the backsplash/countertop and do the dark blue-grey on the bottom cabinets for contrast.

Personal preference. If you like dark cabinets I would use STIX primer and java gel stain, top with a satin water based poly. If you want a whitish, or color I would paint with chalk paint, you could even glaze or wax over them to give many differ looks to match your preferences. I think if you are keeping the light counters, I’d gongel stain dark java! Good luck.

The darker seem classier and more modern...... tough call.

Take one of the cabinet doors to the paint department of the home improvement store and ask them to select paint/stains and other finishes and application tools that will work for your kitchen. They have the best selection, the most up-to-date materials and most important, the most informative sales staff to get you what you need for a professional job.

Hi Megan, I think you should go with a light color. Everything I read says people are looking for white, light bright cabinets in the kitchen. I had mine painted with chalk paint with a heavy duty sealer. I painted my cabinets off white with a grey base cabinets.

I would paint them an off white. Do not use chalk paint as it does not last. Since your husband is a painter, he probably knows that a good stain blocking primer is necessary. If the cabinets are in good shape, lightly sand, prime, sand again, and paint. You may have to do more than one coat of paint. I would use a sprayer so that there are not brush marks. Good luck.
