Be sure to clean it and paint with a paint designed for metal exteriors and doors are usually done in a semi-gloss finish for easy cleaning. Removing it from the hinges and taking off the hardware is the best way to do it.

I have a metal front and back door. I used leftover satin finish interior paint from inside project and have never had a problem with peeling or difficulty cleaning. Over the last 11 years, I've changed the color of my front door about 3 times and just buy a small can of interior paint (because it's cheaper) for the outer side and still have paint left over. And I have never taken it off the hinges. To dry, I just leave it open and put a doggie gate up to keep my dog from getting out. It dries pretty fast. This is the only pic I could find of my door. Oh and I learned the hard way; don't bother taping any glass panes. Just use a razor blade to remove any paint. The easiest and cleanest finish!

You can use Vaseline on anything you don’t want paint on instead of taping too.

Thank you!!! Did you use a roller or brush?

I have used a roller for flat surfaces and a brush for the detailing and did the detailing first.

My suggestion is to use a rust - preventative such as Rustoleum, then paint over that. Rustoleum protects the metal plus acts as a primer to bond to the next layer of paint.
