This is a super easy project and you may have many of the items already on hand. I love creating an inviting space on our porch and with summer flying by, I knew I needed to create some fun outside my front door. Diane from the Hometalk Tutorial team said twinkle lights inside jars remind her of firefly nights as a kid and I agree. I think that is why I love these little lights so much, they remind me of a simpler time. So cool that we can make DIY Firefly Lights...
I used an assortment of jars. I ended up not using the middle (quart sized) one. I used 3 pint sized jars and 1 half gallon jar.
Jar 1. Because I was somewhat “winging it” Not a lot of process pictures were taken. First, I put carpet tape (super strong permanent double sided tape) around the top. But by the last jar, I used plain old hot glue and it worked just as well if not better. I wrapped jute twine around the top. I felt that the cross hatch grid of the carpet tape was difficult to cover with twine. Hot glue works much better.
I tore some thin strips of fabric about 6 or 7 times the height of the jar. I knotted them at the bottom and brought them up the sides to the top of the jar. I tied 1 strand of jute twine to secure them to the top of the jar and added a bow. I also used the excess fabric at the top to make a braided hanger.
Jar 2. For the second jar, I took 4 strands of jute twine and knotted them at the bottom. At each corner of the bottom of the jar put a dab of hot glue and place the jute twine in the glue while bringing it up the side of the jar.
I used carpet tape around the middle but you can just use hot glue. I am peeling off the outer backing to reveal the sticky adhesive. I brought the four strands up and pressed them into the tape and then I covered this with a band of fabric. On top of that fabric band I added jute string tied in a bow.
Jar 3. I used a combination of the other two. I used fabric strips with 4 strands of jute twine on top, knotted in middle. At each end of the X on the bottom, I knotted each.
I took one piece of twine and knotted it with a fabric strip from a side section. I worked up the side of the jar creating a criss cross fashion.
I added wire string lights that are battery operated.
It would be so charming to ladies coming over for bunco night or really any get together.
Just a little extra touch, to greet your guests at the front door.
I think the twinkle lights create a warm inviting atmosphere.
Looking for ideas on what to put in the metal basket. I'm stumped. I have cinnamon scented pine cones but that seems the wrong season.
And a night time shot...
Once you start making these, you might want to make some for all the holidays or create themed firefly jars. I was disappointed that the red lights didn’t show through the fabric soooo...No reason they have to be inside the jar!
And if you like the simple version, I made this in less than one minute. No glue, just twine, twinkle lights, the jar and a flower bouquet. I think I will make a tutorial because it was pretty slick and quick.

Hi, I have seen so many variations of these. Yours are very cute! But my question is, how do you hide the battery pack? The light sets I've seen, the battery pack seems a little bulky. Thanks, Sunny 🌞

Thanks for the quick reply. Do you have a link to where you bought the lights? I have never seen white or clear battery packs. Thanks!
