I need suggestions for placing furniture in a large L shaped room.

My husband passed away in our home and I struggle with those memories. As a way to change them, so I can stay in the house I love, I have removed a wall, thus eliminating the room where he died. Now, however, I have a challenge of figuring out how to use this oversized space. Help please. The room is now L shaped, with the horizontal part of the L being 26' long (12' wide), with the entry in the middle of it (north side) and patio doors on either side of it (facing east and west). The vertical part of the L is 32' long (13' wide), has 2 patio doors on the east side with a blank wall span of 10' between them, and a large picture window on the south side. The top portion of the L, on the west side, has an entry to the kitchen (about 5' opening) and a blank wall span of 8' in the southwest corner. The ceiling on the east side is 9' high and 22' high on the west side, with a loft overlooking the space. The stair entrance to get to the loft is in the northeast corner. As it is the horizontal part of the L that was the room where my husband died, that ceiling is a standard 8' high. I'm struggling with furniture placement in this new space. It has been a combination living/dining room and needs to remain as such. The dining room table is a large rectangle (comfortably seats 8 in it's smallest position) and I often host 22 for dinner. For these large dinners I slide the living room furniture against the walls, expand the dining room table to it's largest size, and butt it up against it a folding table topped with a piece of plywood to mirror the dining room table. I can then dress the table as if it's one long table that can accommodate 22 people, but the majority of the room is taken up with the table. I need to be able to continue that practice. I am also a musician and would like to have a piano, 2 music stands, and flute (2) and trombone (1) stands accessible. The height of the ceiling aids in the acoustics of the space. Any insight into how to place furniture in this space would be appreciated. Thank you.

I am sorry to hear your husband passed away.

The best thing you can do is take a large piece of paper (wallpaper) and cut out your room on scale : 1/10 for easy calculating. Then you mark all the windows, doors etc and cut out your funiture and everything that you want in the future (squares) on the same scale and place them in your "room". Keep in mind that you need always about 3' of "circulation" between all pieces..

You are welcome, I lost my husband 2 years ago. I am glad you have a project and hobbies. The only advice I can give you is to keep busy. It makes it a bit more bearable.

Now, you not only need those 3' of circulation space to wander around, but it makes it also so more easier to clean.

After my husband's leaving, I had to sell the house and move (temporarly) to a little flat and I mean very small : 32m2 = 344 square feet? It is impossible to clean. I only had 50 cm (20 inches) aound my table. I had to move my chair if I wanted to open the fridge. No lounge of course but a separated bedroom ( 15 inches around the bed, thus impossible to maneuvre your brush or hoover.

Now my new house has been built and I made sure I have enough space to wander and clean.. even if it mend to downsize my table. I bought a new one that I can extend if necessary.

I hope you get through this and I wish you all the best for the beginning of your new life as a single.

First...I am so sorry for your loss! You are going through a rough time and keeping busy (as you are) will help. Second....In my experience, you have to sit down with paper and pencil and draw out what you have and where you might like it. Then put is there. If you don't like it...move it. It will be hit or miss for a bit, but you will soon find just what you are looking for.

My heart goes out to you. I don't know where you live but there are many "decorator 1 day fee" companies for very little $$$. You need what we call "feet on the ground" to see your space. Wish I lived close to you as I would assist you. And I would so enjoy the company and entertainment. You are a jewel.

I live in Tiny, Ontario (about 2 hours north of Toronto, on the shores of Georgian Bay). If you're up this way, please stop in. Good idea about the decorator for a day. Thank you.
