Strip, sand very well, following furniture grain. Sweep, using a soft cover atop your sweepers attachment so you don't scratch the wood. Follow by using tack cloths to remove sanding residue. Prime and paint, or re-stain using a much lighter color (pickled oak stain, for instance), and seal. The original wood may dictate how new stain takes, when applied.

Everyone always forgets one thing- to have a gorgeous end result it always starts with the prep! Don’t take shortcuts or rush through just to get to the color! Degrease and clean the pieces, fill or patch any holes, dings, dents, bumps and scatches. Even If you’re going for a distressed look. Remove and soak all hardware in a solution of white vinegar and water. Or heck, buy new!!
when you have your piece prep ready- start choosing colors. I don’t care that paint nowadays are marketed as 2-1. Buy a can of Kilz2 water base and give a coat of primer. That $7.00 investment will save you so many headaches later.
i buy the sample cans at Lowe’s, Home Depot and have them tint to my choice of colors. Unless you want a mono scheme throughout.

Check out chalk paint. No prep needed except a good cleaning. Love it. Just check on line for information.
Try Dixie Belle milk paints. No prep needed. Just wipe the piece with a damp cloth to remove dust and grime, then paint. I’ve done a buffet, desk and a nightstand using this method.
I can't tell from the pic - make sure your pieces are actually solid wood before you do the strip/sanding work. If it's covered with thin veneer or is not wood at all, the only thing you'll end up with is scratched formica or ruined veneer.

Strip the stain or sand it off, then Prime, undercoat and topcoat. You could use Chalk paint right over the dark finish, but it will not be as hard wearing. You would need to give it a sealer coat.
