My bathroom is old with yellow spongy type wallpaper and the tub surround is all cracked and it has contact type glue on the wall. I need to fix this with not a lot of expense

To remove Wallpaper, get a wallpaper scoring tool at your local home improvement center and an unused pump sprayer. Run the scoring tool all over your walls until there is no place bigger than 2” wide without a line in it. Spray the wallpaper lightly in several coats until you saturate it. Use a scraper to peel paper off and resoak any that is still stuck. It may all come off easy or it may not but if you stick with it you can defeat that sticky spongy paper on your wall!

Your tub surround is a whole another matter.

The fact that it’s cracked all over makes me think that you may have water seeping behind and it needs to go. The only way I know to replace a tub surround is to remove the Greenboard that it is glued to. You will need to resheet your walls, use red guard in the corners & edges, and install a new surround. It’s not cheap to do and mistakes can be even more costly.

It would be quicker and more cost effective to hire it done. Get references (at least three) and make sure they are licensed and bonded. Or if you are one of those lucky people who know a handy person, maybe you can barter with them!

    i hope that helps

I agree with Kim, the surround needs to be replace and you have to check for mold. Greenboard and red guard are the way to go. You'll have to be on the lookout for moldy spots when removing the wallpaper too. It could have been absorbing moisture for a long time. While do some things in the bathroom, make sure that you have an exhaust fan big enough to take care of the space.
