How do I move my perennials?

are you moving and wanting to take the plants with you, or are you thinning out the plants to relocate in your property?

pot them in temporary pots, or- i used a larger shallower Rubbermaid container meant for storage- put potting mix in it and nestled my plants in it, the movers would't take them to my new place, so by car & 4 tubs later my garden starts made it in good shape to the new house- i would think the same would work for you..... your bonus is that you don't have to by the gas.

Put your existing flower bed plants in a larger temporary container, with potting mix, and dampen it. When I last relocated, my plants relocated with me...don’t worry about proper spacing etc. I used a larger plastic tub...it was an old Rubbermaid trug. Pack the plants in, it will keep the roots cooler. I actually ran out of room in the trug, found a strurdy box that once held fruit, lined it with a plastic bag and the rest of the plant starts did ok in that. Use what you can readily get...

find a box, line it with a black plastic bag. add an inch of potting mix. carefully remove the plants you want to keep, leaving a smallish dirtball on the roots, place in the box. slightly dampen the soil in the box or if really hot out a few ice cubes. try to keep the box shaded a bit. you can pack quite a few plants together its just a temporary relocate. when I made my last move 4 years ago many of my plants came with me.

find a box about 3-4 inches deep, line it with a black plastic bag, place the perennials in the box. pack them in. give them an inch or so of potting mix & give them a light watering. set them in a more shady area until the flower bed is ready.

I use plastic grocery bags to move ( hosta for example) plants from one spot to another. If you dug up quite a bit of dirt with the plant, just dump it in the bag. Mine can stay for a couple of days, and they can be watered, also,with out getting ridiculously heavy.

My plants always do best when they are replanted immediately, but adding a lot of dirt may take you a while, if it is that much new dirt that it will really raise the level of the entire bed.

With the rubbermaid idea above - it would probably be much too heavy for me, although might be fine , also.
