How To Make A Headboard

This is a queen size headboard I made for our bedroom. We'd gone a few months without a headboard and decided it was time, but we couldn't find one we liked in-store that fit well in space we wanted to put it. We needed the headboard to be under 45", and most of the ones we liked were well above that height. Anyway, this is our DIY Queen Size Headboard!
Step 1 is gathering all the materials needed. For this project we used...
  • 7 – 6’ 1×4
  • 2 – 8’ 1×21 – 8’  4×4
  • 1 – 6’ 1×6
  • 2 -- wood embellishments
We also used...
  • 1 ¼” wood screws
  • 1 ¼” brad nails
  • 3" wood screws
  • 4 lag bolts
  • Wood plugs
To install the wood plugs, you will need a countersink bit to use when drilling your pilot holes. To finish the headboard we used...
  • 150 and 220 grit sand paper
  • Wood stain
  • Polycrylic satin finish
  • Foam brushes and rags
Draw yourself a sketch and count out the pieces if you work better with a drawing.
Next we made all the cuts.
  • 8’ 4×4 – cut into two 44” long pieces (posts)
  • 6’ 1×6 – cut to 64 ½” long (top of headboard)
  • 6’ 1×4 – cut six of the pieces down to 54 ¼” lengths (slats)
  • Cut one of the pieces down to three 24” pieces (supports)
  • 8’ 1×2 – cut into four 24” pieces (back side supports)
After the cuts are made, you can dry fit the piece together. The 4x4 posts go on either end.

The 1x6 top goes on top of the postsThe 1x2 supports go along side the 4x4 posts

The slats fit between the 4x4 posts and between the 1x4 slats

You'll now just have the back side supports leftover and you don't need to dry fit those.

Once you dry fit them it's as easy as assembling with glue and screws, sanding and finishing!
