Carpet VS Flooring?
We are getting close to deciding whether to go with new carpet (our house is on a slab) or go with Flooring, which means also purchasing area rugs. Do any of you still have carpet or feel it is an outdated item? Thanks for your ideas!

If you make the floor heated you will not require the carpeting. It will be a little more expensive but the end result will be far more comfortable on the feet as the floors are always warm. Over the heated floor you can place a hardwood or vinyl planks.
Your flooring is a personal preference. The current trend now is towards wood look flooring but that doesn't mean you have to go in that direction. I feel carpet is warmer and I like it in my living room and bedrooms but I also live in a very cold climate. I like the wood look flooring in my dining room, kitchen and bathroom because it's easy to keep clean in those areas. If you have pets or small children spilling things--carpeting is not easy to keep clean.
Carpeting is more comfortable in colder climates, for the elderly, those with arthritis, or families with smaller children/those with mobility issues, where falls can be a problem. Carpet better absorbs sound, particularly if you have an "open floor plan ". Remember that area rugs can pose a trip and fall hazard.
Bare floors are fine if everyone is careful to avoid dragging things across the floor that will scratch it. Animals can pose problems, either way. Bare floors are much noisier, and darker floors show more dust and dirt. Glare from lighting can be a problem, for some people.
It’s less about style and more about your preference. I prefer wood floors with area rugs. Much more hygienic as well.
Actually, if you’re thinking of selling, wall to wall carpet is a serious negative, especially if it’s not brand new.
Hi, Lil,
Have you looked at the new stainmaster carpets? They're marketed as being excellent for people with multiple pets. You can always have them cut and bound as area rugs.
