Replacing our old large microwave with a new space-saver microwave required us to piece together our backsplash as additional wall was exposed.
Here's the wall behind the stove and around the large microwave after we added the new backsplash (see my earlier post about doing this job using an adhesive mat).
Notice how little of the backsplash is showing between the bottom of the microwave and the stove. When this old microwave quit working this year, we replaced it with a new low-profile microwave (meaning "much shorter").
You can see how much shorter it is, thus exposing about 7.5" of drywall.
Using a Dremel Max, my husband cut the grout around the tiles on the edge to cut out the partial-tiles (those that he had originally cut to fit the space.
Using materials left over from the original backsplash project in 2015 (Mussel Bound Adhesive Mat, tiles and grout) we filled in the space, cutting new tiles as needed and grouted. Now it looks so much better with that huge microwave gone and it doesn't appear to be a patch job -- looks as if we did it all at the same time.

I am interested to know what will happen when you want to remove the tiles some time down the road. Will the adhesive mat come off without removing the sheet rock paper--the top layer of the sheet rock? I want to try this mat in my bathroom above my shower/tub combo walls to install a penny tile border. I will not install the whole sheet of penny tile--I will cut it for a narrower border.
