Flower garden taken over by grass

Question

I have a flower garden on the edge of my lawn, the last few years the grass has taken over,  I can no longer pull it and digging it is also next to impossible, the roots go on forever. Can I lay cardboard over it and fill with soil to make a raised bed? Will the grass and roots die out? And how deep will I have to make it in order to plant a new garden?

I had a similar problem at the edge of my deck so I took lots of newspaper and some cardboard that I had and kept it covered all last summer. I weighted it down with rocks. I actually just covered it over this year with pine straw and dug my holes through it for anything I wanted to plant. I haven't had a weed one grow. It may take a while to get rid of your grass and weeds and it might not be until next year before you can really do what you want to with this are. Best of wishes to you!!!

Yes you can. I did the same thing to my entire backyard last season- covered all of the grass and weeds! I began with cardboard and newspaper, but when I ran out, I began using the brown paper yard waste bags- this worked great. I then added garden soil and mulch over the paper bags- My garden is doing great... Good luck!

I would agree that yes, you can cover the weeds with cardboard and add dirt to make it a raised bed. However, if it were me, I would use hay instead (organic) because cardboard can contain lye and other petroleum products. It would not matter if you made it a flower bed but I would not put edibles in there with cardboard underneath. Just my humble opinion :) Happy Gardening!

We live , on a farm so hay fields all around,I gave up several years ago trying to have a nice garden,so now I wait for my .plants
 to emerge and then I weed wack as close as possible and then I spray with round up.in between the plants not the best but i save days of digging.
