Putting Dining Room Chair into my Garden?

Hi All!

I garbage-picked a single dining room chair that's a boring Parson's style with a (bad!) factory off-white "lacquer" finish.

I absolutely do not want to put any heavy work, time or money into this project as the chair is pretty boring. My plan is to remove the seat and toss out the fabric cover. Then, I'll cut a circle out from the wood seat and screw it back in place. This will serve to drop one of the planters I already own into the hole and plant with flowers.

I thought I'd run over to my Homey Depot and get either some reject house paint and/or samples to keep costs to a minimum.

Two Questions:

  1. With a hole cut in the center of the seat made of thin plywood, do you think it's strong enough to hold a plastic pot filled with soil? Or should I get a small pot, use coconut coir (not so great in HOT FlaDuh), or stick with putting a pot on top?
  2. If I paint every surface of the chair, including the underside and feet, do you feel using house paint will keep the chair from falling apart for several years?

As always, thanks for your advice! icon

To keep the chair from rotting away due to all the weather changes, I'd make sure to seal everything - after it's all painted - with some clear Marine Spar varnish/polyurethane. This will protect and preserve it for many years to come, especially if you reseal it every 3 yrs.

Thanks Thelma! That's what I figured and I can then use the sealer for other raw wood I want to use out there also. Have a great day!

I would spray when finished with polyurethane to seal it up.
