How can I change the configeration of my deck when i replace it?

My deck is in sad disrepair. It is probably as old as my house which was built in 1989. At the time it had an above-ground pool which we took out a few years ago. it had "imploded" due to ice not once, but twice. So we removed the pool but the deck still has an extension to go into the pool. We removed the stairs, but the gate is still there, but we closed it permanently with screws. We now have a one year old grandson Henry who is just beginning to walk. The deck must be replaced next year as it's becoming quite rickety. I need to straighten it out, removing the pool-designed end. I want to make the left and right corners rounded to add some zip to the boring square.

Honestly, I think it would be safer to just get rid of the old one and replace with a new design and style, - reuse all the materials that are available to reuse in order to save money.

I have no inclination to use even the screws from the old deck. ?? I'm just looking for ideas to thwart the divot where the pool was.

Hi JoAnn It would be most helpful if you could include a picture of the existing deck so we can be of more assistance. But I am including a picture of our deck to show you how we angled the corners so we didn't have a square deck.

I'll take pictures tomorrow of the deck. I really like your design. The ground that was dug out for the in-ground pool is starting to fill in a bit, but it's still lower on the left side of the house versus the right side. Oh, and the horses we have like to come up to the deck to receive treats. So I need a couple of stairways to make it easier to feed the horses.

  • Who is your deck builder? You can do any shape you wish! Add some curves for interest. Here are some sites for you to play with.

Thanks for the sites. We are doing it ourselves but before you start your eye-rolling, my brother is a professional contractor. I love to have him out for BBQ's and a "don't do this" question period. I'm a good cook so I get away with it. That and we've had lots of experience...
