My husband is building a brick wall around our tree. How do we fortify it and what kind of plants should we plant ? icon Thank you in advance.

  • What do you mean by fortify? Looks sturdy enough to me

We have some pretty cold, snowy Winters.. I didn't want to see a wall burst apart....the wall is also on a hill. My husband put a lot of work into and he kept the integrity of the structure pretty...I just wondered what else would have been an option.

If these bricks are mortared in, and because of the curve, you should not need much more support. Just remember, when you add more dirt or mulch around the tree, don't cover the trunk more than it is now.

I think the wall looks sturdy. The tree looks established and you should not have tree root problems, but keep and eye anyway. I would avoid any bushes which grow large root systems that can harm the wall. Junipers would be OK, but not azaleas and bigger. Plants which stay small and help with erosion to hold the soil would be best. Tiger lillies would be nice.

you do need some drain holes though.
