The cheapest and environmental friendly way would be to spread newspaper over the grass area weighed down with small rocks, bricks, etc. water every day for a week or so. The paper will kill the grass and you can even turn it into the soil as mulch if you plan on adding any plants. My daughter did this in an area of her yard to prepare for flowers and it worked beautifully and was so easy, Peary.
You can kill it off with vinegar, dig it out or use chemical applications.

Paper, cardboard or landscape cloth would work. An application of rock or mulch would finish as top dressing.
We've had real good results with flattened cardboard. The layers of newspaper work, too, just make them thick enough. Good luck!
