HELP PLEASE? Why is my chalk paint taking forever to dry?

Can someone please help me? I painted my laminate countertop (kitchen) with chalk paint (as watched DIY here). However, the chalk paint is taking forever to dry. In fact, days as opposed to the 2 hours indicated. Ventilated area so that is not a concern. Now, I am putting the wax on and it is removing the paint. What do I do? Thanks Hometalk Family.

Oh wow Brenda, Did the instructions indicate that it needed scuffed or sanded prior to painting? I’m worried that you will need to do that and re-do it. Hopefully someone else has a better idea. I’m so sorry. It sounds like someone forgot to share some of the instructions. That would be horrible. Even worse if it was a large area.

Thank you Candice Gollam. It has truly been a nightmare and continues to be one. However, I am remaining positive (after many curse words). I did exactly as several videos indicated. In the beginning, I thought 'chalk paint' was going to be my new best friend. But not sure anymore. I cannot and am not doing it over as have done way too much work already. Just going to work with what I have. The good news is the wax dries in no time and thought it would take 24 hours as indicated. Have fixed the spots that came off but now that has messed wax up. hahahahahahaha. I must laugh. Sorry for the 'novel' but shall make this work one way or another. Then, I shall post a pic if I can figure out how. Take care and thanks for your support.

    Hi Brenda,

Wow, you really had trouble with your project. I'm wondering if you sanded your laminate? I know with Annie Sloan's Chalk Paint to you don't have to sand, but other brands or homemade, might be different. I've also seen articles that recommend sanding laminate even with chalk paint so that it will stick better. The fact that it didn't dry though, makes me wonder if there was something wrong with the paint? As for the spots where the paint messed up the wax, you should be able to wax those spots and blend into the other waxed part. Remember to wax your cabinets on a regular basis to keep them looking good. Wishing you the best.

Oh Brenda, I knew what you meant but actually wrote it backwards. I was actually trying to suggest exactly what you did. Oops! The wax was taking the paint off because the paint didn't stick to the laminate. That's why I mentioned that it's recommended to lightly sand laminate. I hope this paint sticks on for you for a long time!

Oh I’m so glad that you replied. I heard your cry and I thought oh nooooo. I am so very happy to hear that all may not be lost. I’m an artist myself. I never do the same thing twice or draw or paint the same thing twice. I could only imagine how you were feeling.

‘’Yes yes send me a picture. You should post it on here too. You have a lot to teach through your trials. I will anxiously await your reply and have no fear of writing too much. I love to hear about your crafting and I have nothing better to do than to read how this is working out. That makes my heart happy!!

Bye for now. And I’m serious about the pic. Find someone else to send it if you cannot. I would send you my personal email but I don’t wanna post it here.

    ‘’Candice

Hi Brenda. If you have sanded off some of the chalk paint and it is ready to seal, you can spray if with a lacquer finish. Do not despair...it is a live and learn process!

Thank you Nancy. It sure is a live and learn process. My concern is the many coats of everything on my counter top now. I tried dipping my finger in paint and covering up flaws. However, since it is already waxed, different colours. Some raised parts but have given up removing them at this point. Will just keep going until the look is achieved (if possible).

Hi Brenda, i am assuming you want the basic look of chalk paint where some of it gets sanded off to make it look old and worn off?! I refinished atwonpieces of dining room furniture witH calk paint. Prior to painting, all i did was wipe it down to make sure there was no dust or obvious polish buildup. This eas my first project...somi went in with basic know how. After two coats, i sanded with a sanding block...my arms were ready to fall off. I figured out that if i took a wet clothe and went over the area to be sanded first, the sanded would be easier. It totally was. My original plan was to spray laquer as i had done on the dining room chairs, but i decided to just use butchers wax. A thin coat dried in 15 minutes and then i buffed it by hand with a clean dry rag. Beautiful! Maybe you could spray it with lacquer, let dry and start over?! You must be soooo frustrated. Good luck.

How do I keep gnats out of garbage disposal? My girls make fruit drinks, smoothies, fruit snacks, etc. After A few days of “fruiting out” those gnats just hover. I buy repellants, sprays, and keep disposal whirling. Takes another few days to get rid of gnats!! Any solutions?

They are called Drain Flies. I use a pest control spray for them. Best time is after you are done in the kitchen at night. Clean everything and run disposal. Then spray your drains. Works all night without anyone rinsing it off.
